"I know I've said a thousand times that I would never go back to reality TV," she admits exclusively to PEOPLE. "This worked out really well for me because I was already going on a podcast tour, and so I just thought, if cameras want to come along, I'm already doing it. It just really kind of naturally fit into my life." Jeff Schear/E! ENTERTAINMENT In the five years that she's been off of TV screens, Cavallari launched the popular podcastLet's Be Honest, which served as the jumping off point for the docuseries. "[It's] the only show that I've done where I can say it was 100% authentic. It was real. It was the most real show I've ever done, and that was a really enjoyable experience," she says. In fact, Cavallari's commitment to being "real" almost stopped production of the series. When Cavallari felt things were becoming too contrived, she put her foot down. "I actually tried to quit the show three days into production because — and this isn't a knock on any of the producers — but I think when there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen, everyone gets excited, and they had a lot of ideas about who should come on my podcast tour, and it started really taking a left turn from what it was intended to be," she says. "So I was like, 'Listen, I'm not going to do the show. If you guys are going to try to control what this podcast tour is, I'm more than happy to not do it,'" she says. "And I think that it was good because it made everyone realize I'm not going to do it unless it's real. I don't want to come in and have you guys tell us what conversations to have." TheThe Hillsalum credits age and experience for the confidence required to take a stand. "I think it's different when you need something versus when you don't need something. It was different when I'm 17 years old, [like] 'Yeah, I'll do whatever the hell you want, put me on TV,'" she says of herLaguna Beachdays."Whereas now I'm more than happy to just stay at my house and not do any of this." MTV With the show's premiere looming, Cavallari says the tour as a whole was "way more emotional" than she had been anticipating, and as a result, the show will be "more personal." "With live shows, anything can happen. But I went into it thinking like, 'Oh, this is going to be easy. It's going to be a breeze. Nothing's going to come up.' And I was very wrong about that," she says. "I had my eighth grade boyfriend Johnny come out for a show in Chicago that was very different than I thought it was going to go.The high school crew,Lagunacrew, that was kind of a lot." She also will have her kids appear on TV with her for the first time. "They had a lot of fun with it and they were 100% themselves on camera, which was really cool to see," she says ofsons Camden, 12, Jaxon, 10, and daughter Saylor,9, whom she shares with ex-husbandJay Cutler. On the March 25 episode of her podcast sherevealed that she regretted not including her kids on her previous show. "That was the one thing withVery Cavallari— my kids are the biggest part of my life. And them not being onVery Cavallarireally did a disservice to myself," she said. "I did a disservice to myself because if I can't show the biggest part of my life, well, now we're having to fill in all of these areas that would normally be my kids, and we're having to force storylines. And we're having to basically make s--- up. And I really regret that, to be honest, because it wasn't an accurate representation of what was going on."
